About CEC

Under New York state law, professional engineers and land surveyors are required to obtain continuing education to maintain their professional license.

In order to assist our members in meeting this requirement and to enhance professional development on all levels, NYSCHSA formed the Continuing Education Consortium (CEC) in 2004.

The Continuing Education Consortium has been approved as a Sponsor Organization by the Practicing Institute of Engineering, Inc. (PIE).  As a Sponsor Organization, CEC will prepare, promote and implement Continuing Education activities in accordance with NYS State Education Department requirements.

The goal of the Continuing Education Consortium is to use the collective talents of the NYSCHSA membership to develop, evaluate and administer training programs that meet continuing education criteria.  All professional engineers, land surveyors and industry professionals whose responsibilities include the building and maintenance of New York State’s roads and bridges benefit from CEC programs.

What continuing education criteria does a Professional Engineer have to meet?

  • 36 professional development hours (PDHs) must be completed every 3 years.

  • 18 PDHs must be completed in "courses of learning.” (Training Programs which have a qualified instructor present during the entire instruction period.)

  • Up to 18 of the remaining required PDHs may be completed through “educational activities.” (Training provided via multimedia such as videotape, audio, correspondence, or satellite video link where a qualified instructor is not available during the entire instruction period.)

  • Professional engineers employed directly by the State of New York and represented by a collective bargaining unit (union) are exempt from continuing education requirements.

What continuing education criteria does a Land Surveyor have to meet?

  • 24 PDHs must be completed every 3 years.

  • 16 PDHs must be completed in “courses of learning.” (As defined above.)

  • Up to 8 of the remaining required PDHs may be completed through “educational activities.” (As defined above.)

  • Government employed land surveyors receive no exemptions from continuing education requirements.

When will CEC Training Programs be offered?

The CEC coordinates training programs to coincide with existing NYSCHSA annual events:

  • NYSCHSA Annual Professional Training Program, Expo and Advocacy Day (January)

  • NYSCHSA Highway School Meetings (June)

  • NYSCHSA Annual Professional Training Program (August)

  • NYSCHSA Bridge Conference Meetings (October)
